Photography
I’ve been shooting for a long time. Even back in the days of film. Making images has always been important to me. The world is constantly changing, and what’s here today may be gone tomorrow. Scroll through some of my favorites below.
Poetry/Writing Groups
Poetry
Poetry and great copy share much. The poet Glyn Maxwell says this: “Make the poem bright at the reading, true in the echo, strong to the ear, right by the eye.” Substitute the word copy for poem and that quote still holds up. Writing poetry does wonders for copywriting. Poetry helps me write with voice, offers constraints that help creativity, and challenges me to find words and phrases that resonate. I publish my poetry here.
26
Based in London, writing consortium 26 brings writers from all corners of the globe together “to inspire a greater love of words, in business and in life.” The membership of 26 are professional business writers seeking enhancement of their craft and to spread the love of words. The consortium also offers its members many opportunities and activities that meet that goal and bring their personal writing to light. 26 is my tribe.
Dark Angels
Dark Angels, founded by writers John Simmons and Jamie Jauncey, hold business writing workshops in inspiring locales in both Europe and America. They take a creative approach toward business writing. Dark Angels knows better business writing begins with better personal writing. And business writing desparately needs humanity and personality. As an alum of the first course ever offered in America, I vouch for their life-changing potential.
The Tortured Past
For another bit of fun, I do a side hustle: The Tortured Past. I have access to a treasure trove of old advertising images from between the 1920s and 1960s. Giving cliche white folk some modern wisdom is a creative blast. And the cars were waaay more stylish back then, too. Below is a just a taste. And there’s always a touch of sauce and sass.
1952 Hudson Hornet Mug
Sip your joe in googie style. The Hudson Hornet is one reason why the ‘50s were great.
1927 Auburn Roadster Tee
You can’t accuse the 1920’s of not having a great sense of typography.
Aunt Jenny
Aunt Jenny doesn’t like cancer. Sometimes you just gotta get up in its face and say, “F*ck you!” She says it twice. With a smile.
Music
If you ever need an answer to a music trivia question, I’m your man. Seriously. I’m your Phone-A-Friend. The video on the right is one song that I’ve been digging of quite a bit.
Right now, it’s “The Bonny,” by Gerry Cinnamon. Heard a clip of the song in an Instagram Story and loved it instantly. Like every tune on the EP, too.
“If I’m going to somehow say something, I better be myself.”
